Join UniSC's Forest Research Institute (FRI) on the first Wednesday of each month to learn about forestry and sustainability.
At each event, researchers and HDR students from the Institute will share insights from their latest projects, and discuss challenges and innovations in forestry, with a particular focus on sustainability and the vital role forests play in tackling climate change. A free brown bag lunch is provided for those who come in person, or you can join online.

Title: From the Andes to the Outback: A 30-Year Forest Science Journey Across Four Continents.
Abstract: Spanning three decades and four continents, starting in Chile, moving through the USA, then Tasmania and Finland, and now back to Australia, Mauricio will share the personal and professional turning points that shaped his career. From early curiosity about natural systems to leading international research on AI-driven forest optimization, he'll discuss what it means to build a research life in perpetual motion, the mentors who shaped him, and his new role leading a Chair at UniSC focused on AI and precision forestry. He'll share concrete results and lessons from his research on sensing technologies for tree detection, fire management optimization, and thinning strategies, plus how he's bringing that work together globally through projects like the EU Horizon OptiForValue, where he served as Coordinator for three years. Perfect for students considering global careers, early-career researchers, and anyone wondering how scientists navigate international moves while staying true to their passion. Expect stories, surprising career turns, and insights into climate, resilience, and the future of forests.
