K’gari forest dynamics from long-term monitoring plots

Primary goal

Research on K’gari will investigate forest dynamics, and how past disturbance has impacted forests and how forests will recover.

This project aims to re-establish permanent plots established by the Queensland Department of Forestry including plots dating back to 1919, experiments related to fire ecology and logging, yield plots from the 1950’s, and monitoring plots for sand mine rehabilitation.

Key deliverables
  • Understanding long-term succession of forests on the world’s largest sand island, World Heritage listed K’gari.
  • Insights from analysis of over 100 years of plot data assessing ecological dynamics of how forests respond to and recover from past disturbance.
