Examination information

This information is for centrally scheduled examinations only.

A centrally scheduled examination is an examination that is timetabled within a centrally scheduled examination period or supplementary/deferred examination periods. Centrally scheduled exams will usually be held online via Canvas, however your course coordinator will let you know if the exam is to be held elsewhere. To find out if your course has centrally scheduled exams, check your course outline.

Key dates

You are expected to be available throughout the published examination periods.

Please refer to the academic calendar for the scheduled examination dates for upcoming semesters.

Please note that UniSC does not offer external exams on behalf of other institutions.

For current students

Further information regarding centrally scheduled examinations can be found on the Student Portal.

Before your exam
Examination timetable and times
  • Exam timetables are emailed to students. Students can also access their exam timetable via the Student Portal.
  • Students with Learning Access Plans will receive their personalised timetables with adjustments at least 3 weeks prior to the exam period.
  • Standard exam session times are 9am and 1pm, unless otherwise indicated on the timetable.
Getting ready for online exams
Starting late or submitting late
  • Students must begin their exam at the scheduled start time.
  • Starting more than 30 minutes late may reduce your available time or may prevent you from undertaking the exam. Students may be asked to provide evidence of circumstances that prevented them commencing on time.
  • When a student arrives more than 30 minutes after the official commencement time for a Zoom invigilated exam, they are not permitted to enter the examination venue or complete the examination. Students should contact Student Central for further advice.
  • For exams with extended availability windows, you may begin at any time within the window but must submit before the deadline.
  • Penalties may apply for late submission of online examinations, unless a student can demonstrate system and/or process issues beyond their control. Penalties and further information can be viewed in section 7.1.8 of the Assessment: Courses and Coursework Programs – Procedures.
Permitted materials

Most centrally scheduled exams are open book, unless the course specified otherwise. Check your course Canvas page for details.

What browser should I use for my exam?
Canvas supports current and previous major releases of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Ensure your operating system and browser are up to date.

You can verify that the browser you are currently using is up to date or find further information on browsers via the Instructure Canvas Community page.

Exam adjustments

If you require alternative exam adjustments on the basis of a disability, neurodiverse condition, learning disorder, mental health issue, injury or illness, or you are a primary carer for someone with a disability or who is considered frail and aged, you are strongly encouraged to connect with AccessAbility Services as early as possible.

You can make a telephone callback appointment with an Ability Adviser through Student Hub prior to the end of Week 9. Students with Learning Access Plans will receive a standard timetable at timetable release date, and a personalised timetable (including adjustments) at least 3 weeks prior to the exam period. Please contact the AccessAbility Services team if anything looks incorrect.

Deferred examinations

If you are unable to attempt a centrally scheduled examination due to illness or other extenuating circumstances, you must apply for a deferred examination prior to, or within three working days after, the examination date via the Application for Deferred Examination form.

Limits on deferred examinations

Can't sit your deferred exam?

A deferred examination is a final opportunity for you to sit your centrally scheduled examination. A student who does not sit for their deferred examination will receive zero marks for the examination.

An examination may normally be deferred no more than once (after the original scheduled examination). If you are again unable to undertake the scheduled deferred examination, a further deferral will not normally be granted.

If you are unable to undertake a deferred examination and you can provide evidence to support exceptional or special circumstances, you may submit an application for a Review of Final Grade on the basis of special consideration.

Grounds for approval of a deferred examination

The following are accepted as grounds for approval of a deferred examination with relevant supporting documentation:

  • illness or serious health problem,
  • serious personal trauma,
  • a cultural or sporting commitment at State, national or international representative level,
  • jury duty,
  • Defence Forces Reserve commitments,
  • serious incapacity during the central examination period
  • religious or cultural grounds, or
  • exceptional family, work or personal circumstances which are outside of the control of the student.

Please see the Application for Deferred Examination form for examples of supporting documentation.

Approval to sit a deferred examination will not be granted where you could reasonably have been expected to avoid the circumstances of missing or performing poorly in an exam, for example:

  • holidays or travel,
  • misreading an exam timetable,
  • social events including sporting or cultural commitments not at State, National or International representative level, or
  • medical circumstances where the supporting documentation provided does not indicate an inability to undertake an examination.

View the academic calendar for information on when the deferred/supplementary examination period will be held.

Troubleshooting

Issues accessing your exam

  • Document any outages (eg. internet or power) with screenshots from your service provider website showing the outage. It would be worthwhile taking several captures to show the issue lasted throughout the exam session.

  • If you are experiencing issues with Canvas passwords, please contact the IT Student Help Desk.
  • If you are experiencing issues logging in or with Multi Factor Authentication (MFA), please view this FAQ.
  • What do I do if I can't access my Online Centrally Scheduled Examination in Canvas?
  • If you are experiencing issues logging into your Zoom invigilated exam, ensure you are logging into Zoom with your UniSC student account, not your personal account. View login instructions.
  • If you are unable access your exam at all, apply for an Application for Deferred Examination with your documentation.
  • If you have accessed your exam, but are unable to complete it, apply for a Review of Final Grade with your documentation.

Issues during your exam

  • If there is a question in the exam that you don’t understand, please answer it as best you can, including any assumptions you made (if a short-answer or long-answer question). Some course coordinators may invite students to contact them via email during the exam – just be aware that you may not get an immediate response so you should attempt to answer the question.

Can't sit your supplementary exam?
