1. What is early intervention (MAP Stage 1)?

The University measures your progress based on the grades you achieve for individual courses, and your overall Grade Point Average (GPA). If you fail one or more courses in a given study period you will receive a MAP Stage 1 notification.

At this stage, you are encouraged to reflect on what might have impacted your studies, and to develop a plan to improve your results in future study periods. The Student Success team can help you do this.

You will need to develop an Academic Improvement Plan that will help you set clear goals and actions to improve your academic performance. This may include:

• participating in academic skills programs
• participating in an additional tutorial or study group
• reducing your study load
• participating in individual case management
• attending counselling
• receiving assistance with personal issues which are influencing progress.

2. What is monitored enrolment (MAP Stage 2)?

MAP Stage 2 identifies students who are at risk of making unsatisfactory academic progress.

You will be placed on monitored enrolment for the upcoming study period if:

• you fail the same course more than once, or
• you fail a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement course, or
• you record a GPA of less than 3.0, or
• there are exceptional circumstances, as set out in the Monitoring Academic Progress – Procedures.

You will need to reflect on what might have impacted your studies and develop an Academic Improvement Plan that will help you set clear goals and actions to improve your academic performance. This may include:

• participating in academic skills programs

• participating in an additional tutorial or study group

• reducing your study load

• participating in individual case management

• attending counselling

• receiving assistance with personal issues which are influencing progress.

3. What is Consideration for exclusion (MAP Stage 3)?

If your performance does not improve during a period of monitored enrolment, or you meet other MAP Stage 3 criteria relating to your unsatisfactory progress, you may be considered for exclusion from the University.

MAP Stage 3 criteria are:

• Failed the same course 3 times
• Grade Point Average less than 3.0
• Failed a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course for the second time
• A combination of any of the above
• Exceptional circumstances, as set out in the Monitoring Academic Progress – Procedures.

If you are identified for exclusion, you will be given the opportunity to submit a 'Show Cause application’ as to why you should be allowed to continue your studies.

If you are excluded, you will not be able to enrol in courses (typically for a period of 12 months) and will need to apply for readmission if you wish to continue your studies in future. Re-admission to your program (or any other offered by this University) is not guaranteed.

What is a 'Show Cause' application?

'Show Cause' is an application form, which gives you the opportunity to explain your circumstances and impacts to your academic performance and outline the steps you will take.

The Show Cause application focuses on three areas:

• Circumstances that impacted on your academic performance
• The steps you took to support your academic progress since being placed on Monitored Enrolment (MAP2)
• If you are permitted to continue studying, what actions will you take to improve your academic performance.

You should provide supporting documentation if it is available and feels appropriate to your circumstances and academic performance.

You can submit your Show Cause application via the form in your exclusion notice email. You must submit it by the due date in your email notification. If you cannot find or access the Show Cause application form, please contact Student Central.
